On our Ningbo workshop floor we sort threads every day, and a mismatched thread is the single most common reason air fittings get returned. The parts often look identical at a glance, which is exactly why the mistake happens. This guide explains the difference in plain terms, gives you a size chart you can use at the bench, and a one-minute rule to avoid the costly error.
What is NPT?
NPT (National Pipe Taper) is defined by ANSI B1.20.1. The threads are tapered — they narrow slightly toward the end — and they seal as the mating threads wedge together. Because the seal depends on the thread interference, NPT connections need a thread sealant: PTFE (Teflon) tape or liquid pipe dope. Common sizes are 1/8″, 1/4″, 3/8″ and 1/2″ NPT. It is the default in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
What is BSP?
BSP (British Standard Pipe) comes in two forms and is covered by ISO 7-1 (tapered, called BSPT or R) and ISO 228-1 (parallel, called BSPP or G):
- BSPT (tapered, R) — seals like NPT, on the thread flank, so it also needs sealant.
- BSPP (parallel, G) — has a constant diameter and does not seal on the threads. It seals on the face with an O-ring or a bonded washer. Adding tape here can stop it seating.
BSP is the standard across Europe, the UK, most of Asia and Australia.

How to identify the thread you have
The size marking (1/4″, 3/8″) is not enough — NPT and BSP share the same nominal sizes. What differs is the angle and the TPI. Use this chart at the bench:

Note the trap: at 1/2″ both standards are 14 TPI, so TPI alone cannot separate them there — the 60° vs 55° flank angle is the deciding check, and a thread gauge is the reliable tool. If an NPT male screws into a BSP female for a couple of turns and then binds, stop; that is the classic near-miss, not a fit.
One-minute decision rule
- Find the port thread angle: flat 60° = NPT; rounded 55° = BSP.
- Count TPI on a 1/8″ or 1/4″ size to confirm (27/18 = NPT, 28/19 = BSP).
- Check whether the port is parallel or tapered (parallel = BSPP, needs an O-ring face seal).
- Match the fitting exactly — or use a proper BSP↔NPT adapter rather than forcing it.
Common mistakes we see
- Forcing NPT into BSP. It may start for two turns, then permanently deforms the port. Replace the port or use an adapter.
- Over-tightening. More torque does not seal better and can crack fittings or strip threads. Tighten to spec, then check for leaks under pressure.
- Tape on BSPP O-ring faces. Keep sealant off parallel threads and off the sealing face; it prevents correct seating.
- Assuming "same size = same fit." Size is not the standard. Always confirm the thread family.
Which should your system use?
If your compressor and tools were bought in North America, standardise on NPT. If they came from Europe, the UK, Asia or Australia, standardise on BSP (and decide BSPT vs BSPP by whether the port is tapered or parallel). Mixing a mixed-origin fleet is where adapters earn their place — keep a small kit of BSP↔NPT adapters so one odd tool does not break the whole line.

Frequently asked questions
Can I connect an NPT fitting to a BSP port?
No. The 60° NPT and 55° BSP thread forms are not interchangeable. An NPT male may start into a BSP female for a turn or two, then bind and gall the internal port. Use a proper adapter or match the standard on both sides.
How can I tell NPT from BSP without a thread gauge?
Check the thread angle and the TPI. NPT flanks look flat at 60°; BSP flanks look rounded at 55°. For 1/4″ fittings, NPT is 18 TPI and BSP is 19 TPI; for 1/8″ it is 27 vs 28. At 1/2″ (both 14 TPI) a gauge is the reliable check.
Do BSPP (parallel) fittings need thread sealant?
No. BSPP seals on the face with an O-ring or bonded washer, not on the threads, so tape on parallel threads can stop it seating. BSPT (tapered), like NPT, does need sealant.
Which thread does my air compressor use?
North American compressors almost always use NPT. Equipment from Europe, the UK, Asia and Australia usually uses BSP. Confirm on the data plate or in the original manual.
What pressure are these threaded fittings rated for?
It depends on the fitting, not the thread alone. Pneumatic couplers and fittings commonly rate 10–20 bar (150–300 psi). Always size to your working pressure with margin and confirm the figure on the data sheet.
